The Biolog Identification System (Biolog Inc., Hayward, California) is a new technology in yeast identification. The system is semi-automated and computer based for the rapid identification of yeasts from both clinical and non-clinical sources. Identification is based on the reaction of yeasts to 94 assimilation and oxidation tests contained in a microtitre tray. The system was evaluated using a range of yeasts isolated from cheese. Biolog was found to be reliable for identification of several yeasts, including Debaryomyces hansenii, Yarrowia lipolytica and Kluyveromyces marxianus.
