Evaluation of some crop residues for their allelopathic effects on germination and growth of cotton and cotton weeds

The study pertaining to the effects of the residues of sunflower, sorghum, rice and wheat on germination and growth of cotton and cotton weeds was conducted in laboratory, pots (net house) and in Research Area of the Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Besides control, the aqueous extracts of the residues of all the four crops were used in laboratory and net house with different concentrations viz., 25, 50, 75 and 100% V/V . For field experiment, chopped residues of the crops under study were incorporated each @ 5, 7.5 and 10 t ha-1. All the crop residues except sunflower @ 25% (v/v) and wheat @ 5 t ha-1 in the laboratory, net house and field experiments, respectively, significantly reduced the germination of cotton seed compared with control. Maximum biomass of cotton seedling was obtained in case of sunflower residues @ 25% (v/v). However, root and shoot length was inconsistent in laboratory and net house experiment. In field experiment, all the crop residues except rice @ 5 t ha-1 significantly reduced the number of weeds over control. Maximum fresh weight of weeds was observed in control. Sunflower @ 7.5 t ha-1 and wheat @ 5 t ha-1 were statistically similar. Control, sorghum @ 7.5 t ha-1 and rice @ 5 t ha-1 gave maximum dry weight.
