Study on packaging methods and chemical application of Dendrobium orchid for export by simulated sea refrigerated container

Mature plants of Den. Madame Vipa x Den. Walter Oumae were packed either bare-root or with potting media in a large or a small box and kept under simulated sea refrigerated container at 15 deg C for 15 and 30 days before replant in a greenhouse. The size of box and media had no significant effect on leaf-drop when stored for 15 days. The plants in the large box, however, had fewer leaf-drop both during and after storage than plants in the small box when stored for 30 days. The plants with potting media had less leaf-drop than bare-roots plants. Package of the bare-root plants with dry method or with their root systems dipped in water, laid on or wrapped with moistened plastic sponge were kept at 15 deg C for 15 and 30 days. The bare-root plants packed with dry method gave the best result in term of loss weight and leaf-drop. Mature plants of Den. Madame Vipa x Den. Candy Stripe were sprayed with 50 or 100 mg/l kinetin or BA either before packing or before packing and after unpacking. The plants were packed either bare-root or with potting media and kept at 15 deg C for 15 and 30 days. The application of 50 mg/l kinetin once or twice to bare-root reduced the number of leaf-drop both during and after storage when kept for 15 days. The application of 100 mg/l kinetin once to bare-root plants when kept for 30 days reduced the number of leaf-drop during and after storage. Application of 25 or 50 mg/l NAA, 25 or 50 mg/l paclobutrazol and 10 ml/l Liquinox-Start were made to Den. Madame Vipa x Den. Walter Oumae with or without potting media after 15 and 30 days storage at 15 deg C. All chemicals increased the infloresence length and the number of flowers per spike of the plants with potting media. However, all chemicals gave poor result when applied to bare-root plants.
