Chemical composition of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.)

On the basis of two-years experiment of the influence of soil type on yield and quality of thyme in Pancevo, Kucevo and Sevojno (Serbia, Yugoslavia), the following conclusions can be made: Different agroecological conditions had significant influence on yield and quality of thyme. Almost the same values for basic elements (N,P,K,Ca and Mg) were detected in plant tissues of thyme from all examined locations, although their content varied depending on examined the soil type, as a result of genetic features of this plant species. The content of all examined microelements in plant tissue (useful and harmful ones) were within the accepted limits, except Cr and Ni, which were accumulated in higher concentrations. Soils pH value had the highest influence on the microelements uptake, thus the content of Fe and Mn in plants grown in Kucevo was increased for more than 100% in comparison to the other two locations. Analysis of chemical content of essential oil of thyme showed dominant contribution of timol (52.18-57.99%) what was significantly above the common value for this compound. Remaining compounds in essential oil were present in much lower content. Differences in chemical composition of the essential oils of thyme between locations were also present.
