In addition to environmental conditions and the technologies used, cultivars with a high genetic potential for grain and a set of other important biological characteristics are another factor of great significance in intensifying the production of wheat. Researchers from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (Serbia, Yugoslavia) pay particular attention to such cultivars as well as to cultivars intended for different production conditions. Because of the great diversity of climatic and edaphic conditions in Yugoslavia, special importance is assigned to breeding for cultivars with high biological plasticity, adaptability and stability. The results of 1997 and 1998 large-plot trials have shown that the wheat cultivars Renesansa, Prva, and Zlatka are characterized not only by high genetic potential for yield but also good indicators of stability. These cultivars should be the core of the varietal assortment in different wheat-growing regions in Yugoslavia. In some of the regions, high and stable yields were also produced by the cultivars Tera na Pesma. In any given region, because of variations in climatic factors, growers should use a larger number of cultivars of different genetic origin that have the same potential for yield but different major agronomic traits.
