Evaluation of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) and some wild Vigna species for salt tolerance

Simple screening method was developed to evaluate salt tolerance of mungbean and wild Vigna species in a pot experiment. Seedlings were exposed to high salinity level by placing pots into plastic containers filled with NaCl solution (EC = 12 DS/m). The level of the NaCl solution was regularly maintained at 10 cm below soil surface in the pots. All accessions exhibited severe salt injury symptoms with included wilting, drying, leaf crinkling, drooping, and abscission of leaves. Difference in salt tolerance was observed in both mungbean and wild Vigna species. The wild accessions appeared to be more tolerant than the cultivated ones. Some accessions were classified as salt-tolerant from their overall performance under the high salinity level.
