The soil in the area of Nuclear Institute "Vinca", in the vinicity of Belgrade (Yugoslavia) was investigated by means of a sequential extraction procedure, in order to predict potential sorption and remobilization processes of heavy metals in the case of an accidental spillage, which could heavily pollute ground and surface waters, especially if we take into account the vinicity of the Danube river. Iron hydroxides were identified as dominant substrates for most of the investigated heavy metals (Ni, Cu, Zn), but organic matter obviously represents an additional substrate for Cu. Cd is present in very mobile forms, which makes this metal susceptible to various influences and enables its migration in the ground water.
