Herbicide selectivity is often based on detoxification which is catalyzed by cytochrome P450 monooxygenases, glutathione S-transferase, glucosyltransferase and other enzymes. Cytochrome P450 plays a significant role in detoxification of herbicides. Cytochrome P450 mediates many metabolic reactions including hydroxylation, dealkylation, deamination, desulfuration, dehalogenation, epoxidation, peroxydation as well as reduction. Enhanced herbicide detoxification is a major mechanism contributing to weed resistance to certain herbicides. Genetic transformation of plants with genes capable of herbicide detoxification has been a successful method to develop herbicide-resistant crops.
