Chemical analysis of the colostrum of carabao and its transition to normal milk

Six carabaos were used. Milk samples collected immediately after parturition and nine days thereafter were analyzed for total crude protein, casein, lactose and titratable acidity. The average of the daily mean values obtained were the following: total crude protein, 7.79%, casein, 4.58%, lactose, 3.11% and titratable acidity, 0.27%. Differences among the daily means for total protein, lactose and titratable acidity were statistically significant at 1% level. Analyses for both total crude protein and lactose showed that the first two days of lactation were signfiicantly different from the rest while with titratable acidity only the first day was significantly higher than the proceeding days. The results suggest that the colostral milk of carabao was the first two days of lactation. It had 14.64% crude protein, 1-97% lactose and 0.35% lactic acid
