When the Nature park "Stara Planina", Serbia (Serbia&Montenegro) was founded in 1997, it was the beginning of protection of all parts of a natural area, from geo- to biodiversity, but also the cultural heritage. Until then, in the area there were seven separate strict nature reserves and four monuments of nature. The designation of the Nature park was the base for nomination of part of this area for IBA area, as well as the biosphere reserve ("Man and Biosphere" program - MAB - UNESCO). Such politics will lead to conservation of fragile ecosystems and the genetic diversity, leading to the sustainable development of all potentials throughout the area.
