In a selected pig slaughter facility, emergency slaughters of pigs were monitored in the period between 1997 and 2002. The proportion of sows slaughtered due to immobility reasons was significantly higher (31.3%) than that of other pigs (9.7%). Locomotor apparatus diseases (pelvic injuries, spinal contusion injuries or injuries of limbs, hind limb paresis, limb injuries, joint and claw inflammations) were the most frequent causes of emergency slaughters due to immobility than other disorders. The number of immobile animals due to locomotor apparatus diseases was significantly higher in comparison with other diagnoses (90% vs. 10% in sows, 96.4% vs. 3.6% in other pig categories). The high number of emergency slaughters due to immobility reflects that the animals are unsuitably handled which results in injuries and pareses of the locomotor apparatus.
