Characteristics of sugarcane [Saccharum officinarum] variety 'NiF8' on stalk emergence or growth, and effects of dense planting, fertilizer application and early ridging to stalk emergence or growth

Relations between stalk growth and their emergence time, emergence position, or emergence depth was investigated for sugarcane variety 'NiF8' in Tanegashima, for both spring-planting and ratooning. Effects of Dense Planting, Fertilizer Application and Early Ridging to the former factors related to stalk growth were also studied. 1. In spring planting, 83% of the stalks that survived at harvest period were those emerged by the end of April, while those emerged from June until harvest were all dead. 2. In ratooning, all the stalks that survived at harvest were those emerged as main stalks by the end of April, while tillering stalks were all dead without reference to their emerging time. 3. In ratooning, stalks emerged out of ridge tended to be heavy in stalk weight. 4. The positive correlation between the stalk weight and the depth of their emergence position in soil that was recognized in NCo310 and Ni12 was not recognized in NiF8. 5 Dense Planting within ridge were effective for increasing millable stalks in spring planting. On the other hand, though dance planting between ridge were superior to that of within ridge in growing more stalks in early period by the end of June, it was to be offsetted by the subsequent high ratio of stalk death and turned out to be ineffective to harvest increase. Also, millable stalks that were increased by dence planting tended to have light stalk weight and resulted in no harvest increase. 6. Increasing basal fertilizer were effective for increasing the number of stalks emerging by the end of June. The average stalk weight was maintained in this case, that turned out to increase harvest.
