"Anthocyanidins in tepals were analyzed by HPLC in 13 genotypes of Muscari ssp. with various flower colors, blue (M. armeniacum, M. armeniacum 'Blue Pearl', M. armeniacum 'Blue Spike', M. armeniacum 'Fantasy Creation', M. paradoxum, M. tubergenianum and flowers in the upper part of the inflorescence of M. latifolium), deep blue (flowers in the middle and lower parts of the inflorescence of M. latifolium), pale blue (M. armeniacum 'Valerie Finnis' and M. azureum), reddish purple (M. comosum var. plumosum), pale purple (M. moschatum), creamy yellow (M. moschatum va.r.flavum) and white (M. botryoides 'Album'). Some anthocyanidins were detected in colored flowers, but no anthocyanidin was found in white flowers of M. botryoides 'Album'. The main anthocyanidin in blue and pale blue flowers was delphinidin, whereas two main anthocyanidins, cyanidin and delphinidin, were detected in reddish purple and pale purple flowers. Totally 13 peaks were detected by anthocyanin analysis in blue, deep blue, pale blue, reddish purple and pale purple flowers. Since peak No.9 was detected as a main peak in most of these flowers, this peak was presumed to be a delphinidin-type anthocyanin. The results obtained in the present study may be useful in systematic breeding to widen the range of flower color in M. armeniacum by molecular as well as conventional breeding methods."
