Summary Aigamo duck farming system in rice cropping is expected being improved in weed management technologies for sustainable agriculture which are environmentally safe. In this study to research the effect of aigamo ducks on growth and production of rice and weeding in paddy rice fields, we established an untreated plot and an aigamo plot in an aigamo duck paddy field at Ezarugi in Karatsu-city, Saga Pref., which was located in the Uwaba-Daichi, and also we selected the another field there in conventional paddy farming as a control plot. In addition, we conducted greenhouse and artificial-light phytotron experiments to investigate effects of deep flooding, muddy water flooding and moving flooded soil surface on weed emergence from the paddy soil of aigamo duck farming. Rice plants in the aigamo plot were lower in height than those of the untreated plot, and there were no weeds in the aigamo plot, but a few in the untreated plot. The yield of rice in the aigamo plot was 454kg/10a, while it was 471kg/10a in the conventional farming field. By experiments under artificial environment, the effect of muddy flooded water was little in weed germination, but it was clear in its growth after emerging. It was supposed to be by decreesin underwater irradiation, and by accumulating clay particles on the surface of shoots of germinated weed seedlings.
