Effect of sucrose and aspirin on vase life of chrysanthemum-cut flowers

Effect of levels of sucrose and aspirin solutions on vase life of chrysanthemum-cut flowers at room temperature (30.2 deg C and 79.3 percent RH) was studied in the plant science's laboratory, Kalasin campus during November 25 to December 8, 1994. The experimental design was CRD with 11 treatments and 10 replications. The result showed that chrysanthemum-cut flowers held in 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 percent sucrose had the shortest vase life (average 4.6 days) when compared to those in tap water (10.1 days) and in aspirin (average 11.9 days). In addition, in sucrose solutions of any concentrations, the petals wilt rapidly, the average of 5.8 cm basal stem-end turned yellow, fresh weight and water uptake decreased rapidly. These were highly significantly different from those in tap water which had slower changes of flowers. Chrysanthemum-cut flowers held in 400 ppm aspirin had the longest vase life of 12.8 days, these being highly significant from those in tap water, increase in fresh weight, more yellow basal stem end, slower wilting of petals and the gradual decrease of water uptake.
