Biological control of Sclerotium blight of barley in the field in 1996/97

Biological control of Sclerotium blight of barley in the field caused by Sclerotium rolfsii was studied at Lampang Agricultural Research and Training Centre, Muang, Lampang. The experimental design was Randomized Complete Block (RCB), with 9 treatments and 5 replications as follow: T1-seed dressing with 0.5 percent (w/w) of powder of Trichoderma harzianum (Th.2) alone, T2-seed dressing with 1.0 percent (w/w) of powder of Th.2 alone, T3-seed dressing with 0.5 percent Th.2 (w/w) combined with 200 kg/rai CaCO3, T4-seed dressing with 0.5 percent Th.2 (w/w) plus 0.2 percent carboxin (w/w), T5-seed dressing with 0.2 percent carboxin (w/w) alone, T6-sowing of CaCO3 at the rate of 200 kg/rai after planting, T7-spraying with Terralyt-Plus at 1:1000 concentration after planting, T8-untreated (check), T9-treated with pathogen agent only (control). All treatments, except check were inoculated with pathogen (S. rolfsii) at the rate of 500 g/plot (5 squar m). Disease, germination, yield and yield components were evaluated. The results showed that seed dressing with 1.0 percent (w/w) of powder of Th.2 alone was as effective method to control Sclerotium blight at seedling, tillering and heading stages of barley as seed dressing with 0.2 percent carboxin (w/w), 0.5 percent Th.2 plus 0.2 percent carboxin (w/w), and 0.5 percent Th.2 cambined with 200 kg/rai CaCO3. These methods had highly significant lower percent disease than the control treatment, and had also significant higher percent germination, thousand grain weight (TGW) and yield (kg/rai) than the control treatment also. The number of head per square meter was significantly higher than control treatment.
