Cholrella isolate 001 - a versatile microalga

Chlorella vulgaris 001 was isolated from an oxidation pond treating rubber processing wastes. This versatile Chlorella grows well in wastewaters generated by several agroindustries in Malaysia, including the ammonia-rich rubber effluent and the oily sardine processing wastewater. This Chlorella is heterotrophic and is tolerant of relatively high heavy metal concentrations. The biomass can reach 1 g/L dry weight in a highrate algal pond treating rubber effluent. This nutritionally rich biomass may be harvested for use as aquaculture feed. Non-living Chlorella biomass was tested as a biosorbent agent for heavy metals. Cadmium and nickel are adsorbed rapidly, reaching equilibrium in two minutes. The maximum binding capacity for cadmium and nickel was 293 and 380 micro mole/g dry wt at pH 5, respectively. Up to 85 percent desorption was achieved using HCl and EDTA at pH 2. This indigenous species of Chlorella has potential as a bioremediation organism.
