Development of a functional food for the reduction of oxidative stress using propolis

Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honey bees from various plant sources. The authors compared the activities of four kinds of propolic samples (PRO, RRI, PP2, PP3) originating in Japan and China to reduce the oxidative damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The scavenging activities of the samples on DPPH radicals were observed in vitro. The results showed relatively strong activity in PP3. PP3 was also more effective than other samples in reducing DNA damage induced by H2O2 y-irradiation in experiments involving single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE; Comet assay) and lipid peroxidation in in vivo and in vitro systems. Therefore, the authors made the pilot product (PP) from PP3 and investigated the effect of the PP against CCL4-induced damage. The PP was given to mice per OS for 2 days prior to CCL4 treatment. The CCL4-intoxication resulted in a marked increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver and the blood. However, the pre-treatment of PP significantly decreased the MDA content in liver and blood by 52 percent and 77 percent, respectively. These results indicate that the propolis product reduces oxidative damage and might become a prospective agent for a functional food.
