Pathological constraints on mungbean grown after rice

In the frame work of the research undertaken at ARC on thr improvement of mungbean in rice-based cropping system, a study has been carried out to identify mungbean varieties resistant to several soilborne fungi. An inoculation method has first been set up, before screeing a germplasm of 95 accessions. Most of the entries were moderately susceptible to susceptible to the four soilborne fungi Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium solani, Rhizoctonia solani, and Sclerotium rolfsii. The highest percentage of pre- and post-emergence damping-off was found for M. phaseolina and S. rolfsii. Field experiments were also carried out to analyze the effect of different cultural practices (sowing date, plant density) on diseases affecting mungbean in rice-based system. Sowing date appeared to be the most important factor affecting mungbean. High CLS severity as observed at early sowing date, while PM severity increased at late sowing.
