Project evaluation of the development of highlanders' life quality and environment within the Mae-Jan and Mae-Salong watershed areas, Northern Thailand

This study was a result of Project evaluation of the Development of Highlanders' Life Quality and Environment within the Mae-Jan and Mae-Salong Watershed Areas, Northern Thailand. The evaluation results were as follows, 1. The foundation was being restructuring its administrative system, adjusting to the changing economic and social situations, and its field work strategy. All members were found satisfied with such restructuring with full cooperation. 2. The project inputs were found as appropriate and effective at a satisfactory level. 3. The current development process of the project was sound appropriate and effective, considering the community's social, cultural and geographical contexts. The process was conducted on the principles of participation, respects of tribal culture and dignity, community education, promotion of learning and adjustment, and team work and networking development. 4. The results of the project and its activities were rather successful in line with its main objectives as planned. 5. The evaluation team could transform a series of lessons learnt from the foundation's highland development project and activities into 3 main issues. Those were, (1) the life quality development, illustrating changes in mother and child life quality, and situational changes relating to the community's folkways and highland environment, (2) development should be conducted with an awareness of the community cultural values, local wisdom, and local community management, and (3) natural and ecological conservation should apply selectively the local wisdom in learning and transferring processes, developing thinking system and methods.
