Potential of single cell protein Chlorella sp. production from dairy farm wastewater

Result of cultivation of Chlorella three strains, Chlorella ellipsoidea TISTR8260 Chlorella vulgaris var vulgaris TISTR8261 and Chlorella sp. TITS8262 growing in N-8 medium showed that Chlorella ellipsoidea TISTR8260 had the best growth performance according to the determination of delta log sub(2) OD and biomass which were 5.01 and 6.89 g/L respectively. The optimal condition for algae culture is 1:10 dilution of dairy farm wastewater with the addition of 500 mg/L sodium nitrate as the nitrogen source. They are cultivated under aeration condition and fluorescent illumination of 4,000 lux intensity (8-h light and 16-h dark). Chlorella ellipsoidea TISTR8260 gave 1.7 in delta log sub(2) OD and produced chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b of 2,635 and 2,221 mg/cubic m respectively with in 168 hours. To harvest the algae alum was used to flocculate. It was shown that the amount of 50 mg/l was bast flocculation for Chlorella ellipsoidea TISTR8260. The nutritional analysis showed the values of 55 percent crude protein 0.32 percent crude fiber and 4.5 percent ads by dry basis.
