Whilst designing the recultivation practices it is important to stress the fact that planted areas have to fulfill significant non-productive functions (climatic, soil forming, hygienic, sanitation, anti-erosive, aesthetic, etc.) and this can be an important motivational stimulus. The biological reclamation of the dumping of red and brown sludge from ZSNP a.s. Ziar nad Hronom requires an inter-disciplinary approach because of the distinctiveness of the stored dangerous waste and the sludge field terrain configuration. The alkaline quality of the environment, grain composition of the sludge (sand to loamy gravel), different water permeability, substantial steep sloping, warm climatic region, lack of water during the warm term, emission loading of the sludge field location, all of these are the extremes of the environment which have to be taken into account during the process of selection of suitable woody plants for re-cultivation. The following woody plants have been chosen on the basis of field inspection in the area of the sludge: Robinia pseudoacacia, Amorpha fruticosa, Swida sanguinea, Populus x canadensis MOENCH.), Betula verucosa, Elaeagnus angustifolia, Salix viminalis, Salixcaprea, Carpinus betulus L, Lonicera tatarica L.,Pinus sylvestris. The biological reclamation itself has to be done in conjunction with suggested technical measures for the sludge fields in order to reach an integrated concept of reclamation works.
