Production of conidia by Cercospora kikuchii in culture
1979
Vathakos, M.G.; Walters, H.J., University of Arkansas, Kansas City (USA)
Only vegetative growth of C. kikuchii occurred on standard lab. media and on agar media prepared from decoctions of carrot leaves and immature and senescent tissues of lucerne, maize, cotton and wheat. Leaf decoction agar from immature soybeans yielded few conidiophores, but on media prepared from senescent soybean plants (SSPA) they were abundant. The fungus sporulated sparsely on SSPA in continuous darkness, but profusely when exposed to light. Sporulation was most abundant in cultures exposed 8 h/day to illumination from Gro-Lux lamps at room temp. More spores were produced on cultures grown from spore transfers than from mycelial transfers. Transfer of spores by tapping the bottom of an inverted petri plate containing a sporulating culture over a plate of fresh SSPA medium produced the max. numbers of spores/plate.
