The objective of this study was to compare the differences in some quantitative and qualitative characteristics of boar sperm between the periods 1990-1997 and 2000-2007. Seven different breeds and their crossbreds were used in this research. Semen volume, concentration of speramtozoa, proportion of spermatozoa with progressive motility and proportion of abnormal spermatozoa were examined. Two linear models were used to analyze the data. The heterosis effect was also estimated. All effects included in the models (breed, season, month, year, collection interval, age, boar) were significant. A significant heterosis effect was also observed in most of the cases studied. Its highest values were recorded for sperm volume. In comparison with the first period, the second period showed an increasing trend in sperm quantity, a stagnating or decreasing trend in sperm quality and a lower manifestation of heterosis in crossbreds.
