A balance experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of two types of feed additives, anise and fennel essential oils (0.1% in feed mixture), and four plant by-products from spices (coriander, allspice, pepper and cumin) on the use of nutrients by pigs. Comparing the effect of the two essential oils, a slightly higher digestibility of nutrients was observed when anise essential oil was added. Nitrogen retention in body mass was improved by 5.6%. Neither of the two additives negatively affected the use of nutrients. The four plant by-products tested decreased slightly but non-significantly nutrients digestibility.
