Growth Characteristics of Three Dendranthema pacificum Accessions

Three distinguished Dendranthema pacificum germplasms were used to investigate the rooting characteristics and overall plant growth responses. The plants were planted two weeks after cutting in a greenhouse (June 21, 2006). Pinching was conducted twice, and plant characteristics were examined thereafter (Aug. 7, 2006 and Nov. 28, 2006). At the first investigation, the plant height decreased in the order of A2, A1, and A3. A2 and A3 had a better branching habit and larger plant volume than A1. They also showed higher total leaf area values, more leaves and branches than A1. At the final investigation, the A3 showed an obvious growth increment compared to the other two accessions. The leaves, rhizomes, branches, and total volume had higher values. However, stems of A3 were so weak that they could not maintain its form and finally sagged. Although the A2 showed the largest plant size at the first investigation, the accession grew slower after the first investigation because the second pinching (Aug. 2006) induced plant growth suppression. The flowering uniformity and developmental speed in A1 were superior and faster compared to the other accessions. The flowering of the others were delayed or ceased subsequently because of the night temperature at the end of October (about 5℃). The retardation of flowering in A2 and A3 should be overcome through earlier planting and soft pinching. Consequently, we concluded that A1 and A2 were more appropriate for bedding plants.
