For a long time, fruits of Quercus rotundifolia Lam. in particular, and of Quercus suber L., were used to feed pigs raised under loose-housing system. The spread of African swine fever turned difficult this type of utilisation and for this reason, the valorisation of these fruits as raw material for extraction of an edible oil is being studied. Physical and chemical determinations of seeds and kernels were made, namely, contents in starch, protein and fat as well as the composition of fat in fatty acids. An appraisal of the potential yield in oil and bagasse that can be obtained from these fruits and what these figures could mean in terms of reduction of imports of edible oils and of maize are considered (author).
