The efficacy of five silage additives on aerobic stability was investigated in whole crop maize in comparison to a treatment without additive and a treatment with propionic acid. The maize was harvested at two different dry matter levels (30 and 38 % dry matter) and ensiled in 1.5 litre laboratory scale silos. During the storage period an air stress was made. For the two control silages, which were made with and without air penetration, the air stress negatively influenced aerobic stability. Under these conditions propionic acid did not improve aerobic stability either. Among the five new additives only the two products Amasil Combi and Schaumasil liquid did improve aerobic stability. These products are now definitively authorised.
