Some chemicals were treated on three buds from the tips of the "Cardinal" grapevine cuttings. The results showed that ethylene chlorohydrin or calcium cyanamide + merit 50 percent increased bud break percentage of all 3 buds and enchanced earlier bud break. They were the most effective chemicals. Calcium cyanamide increased bud break percentage of all 3 buds but did not enchance earlier bud break. Thiourea gave a highly significant difference from the control. It enchanced earlier bud break and increased bud break percentage of the first and second buds. TIBA was the least effective chemical. In the control treatment, new shoot from the first bud had maximum length, but there was no bud break of the third bud at all. GA 3 and GA 3 + NAA showed apparently inhibitory effects in bud break. ABA-like substance level was increased after the cuttings were treated with low temperature condition and decreased when bud break occurred.
