Diagnosis at the dump area of Vargem Grande do Sul, State of São Paulo, Brazil

The generation and disposal of the garbage has causing a series of impacts and risk for the human health at state of São Paulo, Brazil. The main goal of this research was carry out a diagnosis of the water and soil quality at areas of arrangement of the garbage at the county of Vargem Grande do Sul, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The methodology was comprised of visits and photographic survey of the site, chemical analysis of soil (pH, P, S, K, Ca, Mg, Al, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) and water of streams (dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia and nitrate). The photographic survey confirmed that the area is characterized like a dump and the chemical analysis showed a higher organic matter at the plot of arrangement of the garbage. The water analyses indicated that only DO did not reached the recommended limit by the Brazilian legislation (5 mg L-1). The DQO of landfill leachate reached 12,900 mg L-1, indicating potential water and natural resources pollution.
