Identifying Competencies for Vocational Teachers in the 4th Industrial Revolution

As the 4th industrial revolution is unfolding, people are facing up to changes in lifestyle, industrial fields, job market, and education. In order to respond to these changes, vocational teachers are needed to change their roles and duties. This study drew out what competencies are needed for vocational teachers to meet these new roles and duties. To that end, studies about roles, duties, and needed competencies of vocational teachers in specialized high schools and meister high schools were firstly reviewed. Then, given general changes in the education environment, studies about newly-needed roles and competencies for vocational teachers were reviewed. Based on the result of literature review, the first draft of competencies of vocational teachers was set up, and was verified using a delphi scale. Panelists were comprised of vocational education researchers, administrators, and vocational teachers, participating in two validity surveys. As a result, 6 competency domains and 25 competencies were drawn up. The six competency domains include ①Supporting for students-directed development of Job competency, ② Competency-focused teaching-learning design, ③Competency-focused teaching-learning guidance, ④ Career and interpersonal relationship guidance, ⑤Expertise development and adaptation to change, ⑥ Network.
