The paper presents a general description of urban water management in France: organisation, scientific and technical constraints linked with recent European directives, investments scheduled for the 10 comings years. It also describes the role of Cemagref, the French environmental and engineering public research institute, in urban water management: diagnostic and optimisation of water supply and sewage, local public service management for water, sewage and solid waste, waste water treatment: biological treatment of waste water and animal manure.
