Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) an annual seedspice, is grown mostly for the seeds (botanicallyfruits), green herbs and extraction of essential oil fromseeds. India produces 57% of the world production(0.94 mt) followed 0.05% contribution each by Mexico,Syria, China, Iran and Bulgaria. The averageproductivity of coriander seeds in India is 837 kg/ha(2014-15) as against genetic potential of 1600-2000kg/ha. The productivity is reduced to 325-400 kg/hadue to incidence of stem gall (Protomycesmacrospores) in coriander. Monoculture of coriandervarieties and cultivation of susceptible varieties suchas RCr-435, CS-6 and other local cultivars increasesthe severity of disease. The fungus is soil and seedborne and inflicts losses varying from 10.4 to 57.4 %,which may further increase under epidemic conditions.Keeping in view the susceptibility, National ResearchCenter on Seed Spices (NRCSS), Ajmer hasdeveloped a variety, NRCSS ACr-1, resistant to stemgall disease of coriander.
