Pathogenicity and management of phomopsis blight and leaf spot in brinjal caused by Phomopsis vexans and Alternaria solani

A total of 145 brinjal seed samples were collected from different agro-climatic regions of Karnataka during 2001-2003 and analyzed for mycoflora. This crop is susceptible for phomopsis blight (Phomopsis vexans) and leaf spot (Alternaria solani) diseases. These diseases are seed borne fungal diseases and reduce the yield up to 30-50 percent. The pathogenicity test and management was carried out at the department experimental plot. Phomopsis vexans and Alternaria solani 1-10 percent spots in one month, two month seedlings and 20-30 percent in three months old plants. The fungicides were treated at different concentrations (0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 percent) and mycoflora were recorded. The systemic fungicides viz., Carbendazin and Carboxin, non-systemic fungicides viz., Mancozeb, Captaf and Dithane Z-78 were selected for the study. Among the fungicides tested by SBM method, Mancozeb, Carbendazin and Captaf were found superior for the inhibition of seed borne pathogens and increases the seed germination at 0.20 percent concentration.
