Some characteristics of trees to be considered in agroforestry
1983
Huxley, P.A. (International Council for Research in Agroforestry, Nairobi (Kenya))
Trees and shrubs being mainly dominant overstorey plants, they play a key role in agroforestry systems. Agroforestry land use practices can be at various levels of scale but a key to understanding agroforestry systems starts with an appreciation of the environmental and biological processes which occur at the interface between two or more plant components. In order to do this satisfactorily it is necessary to understand the relevant characteristics of the various plant components. Those related to trees and shrubs are noted in a form of a list of points to consider concerning germplasm, propagation, planting-out the juvenile phase of growth, mature growth and senescence and replanting; all in relation to technical managerial and socio-economic considerations.
