Theoretical and experimental aspects of foam-encapsulated apple under impact loading

Introduction of mechanical harvesting of dessert fruits at present is prevented by bruise damage of fruits occuring in these processes. One possible solution to reduce or to avoid bruise damage is to encapsulate fruits and branches with energy absorbing foam. In the paper it is investigated by a finite-element-model how foam encapsulation influences the extent of bruise demage under a supposed load corresponding to usual heights of falling. Preliminary field experiments were conducted on apple trees. It was found, that when the fruit was covered with foam, no indentation occurred and the fruit was rated as of prime quality.
