As a precursor to the development of a program to eradicate American foulbrood from Australian beehives, it is necessary to determine the role of swarms and feral hives as a source of infection in the spread of the disease. This report gives results of three related investigations into transmission, production and spread of the disease. The investigators found that the role of swarms and feral hives in the spread of the disease is minor and would have little influence on an eradication programme if one were implemented.
