The occurrence of a previously unrecognized form of progressive posterior ataxia in Merino sheep is described, characterized microscopically by Wallerian degeneration in thoracic segments of the spinal cord. The sheep were from the Cooma district of New South Wales, and animals of both sexes were affected, with the earliest onset of the disease being at 5 months of age. Most affected animals died before 2 years of age.
