On 23 July 1992 an abnormal increase in the number of deaths in 22-23 weeks old broiler-breeder chickens in one shed at a poultry farm was observed. On 28 July, 17 of 4500 chickens had died. An influenza A virus was isolated and identified from the birds. Preliminary typing of the virus suggests it is H7N3 subtype. If confirmed, this is the first recorded case of a virulent avian influenza isolate of this subtype causing disease in chickens.
