Factors determining seed persistence of Chondrilla juncea L. (skeleton weed) in southern Western Australia [weed of cereals]

Skeleton weed shows little protection from germination during summer rainfall events that are insufficient to guarantee seedling survival. While seeds on the surface are less likely to germinate in such circumstances, they are liable to predation by ants. An analysis of climatic records for Western Australia for the period in which the weed has been known there indicates that seed losses must have been considerable; the persistence of the weed is apparently due to its capacity for vegetative regeneration.
