Alarm bells ring in Vanuatu

Since December 1998, three islands in Vanuatu have been infested by the red ant Wasmannia auropunctata. These tiny undesirables measure between just 1 and 1.5 mm, and build their nests in tree trunks or under waste vegetation, attacking plants - by eating their leaves - and invertebrates too. Their bite causes pain to humans, and is dangerous to animals. To prevent their spread, the plant health inspection service of Vanuatu has been spraying boats and planes coming from the islands of Vanua Lava, Mota and Gaua, whose export of agricultural produce has been prohibited
