M. Truman (Mennick Truman) Fossum (1912-1991) was an assistant professor of horticulture at the University of Maryland. He also served as director of research and member services for the Society of American Florists, a consultant for the Census Bureau, an agricultural economist and consultant for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and an economic analyst for Florists' Transworld Delivery Association (FTD). Fossum campaigned on behalf of the floral industry for unbiased, third-party statistical information services, which led to the establishment of the Horticultural Specialties Census. He initiated benchmark economic studies and services relating to the floral industry, and he led the cooperative effort with the USDA for the development of market news reporting on ornamental crops.
