Incorporating a behavioral model in health education

Health education, in order to be successful, must take into consideration an understanding of behavior formation. A behavior model which is based on one's knowledge (beliefs), attitudes, and intentions is used to assess major motivational factors which encourage people to identify the health quality of their own lifestyles and to assume personal responsibility for their own welfare. This behavior model is explained in 2 schematic presentations: the first is based on intention and the second is based on beliefs, attitudes, intentions, and behaviors (B-A-I-B). The author believes that the B-A-I-B hypothesis accurately predicts behavior formation and should be examined by health educators. By using the B-A-I-B model educational strategies can be developed. Some methods based on subjective evaluation are outlined. Health educators can use facts, positive attitudes, and behavioral intentions to help people analyze their own lifestyles. (kbc)
