Twenty-four persons were infected with Shigella sonnei after eating oysters in southeastern Texas restaurants. The source of the infection was traced to an oyster harvester from a single boat with unsanitary sewage procedures. Details of the identification of the Shigella carrier, methods of identification of the bacterial strain and a probable explanation of the route of the infectious oysters from carrier to consumers are discussed.
