Vitamin A deficiency and anemia
1979
Clinical studies, animal experiments and data from human populations suggest that hemoglobin synthesis is impaired by vitamin A deficiency. Anemia will occur in animals which are fed a suboptimal level of vitamin A for an extended period of time. In the human subjects a decline in serum hemoglobin began well before the loss of night vision acuity or the attainment of "deficient" serum vitamin A values. This may be caused by an impairment in the mobilization of iron from the liver to hematopoiesis sites.
