Catalytically active metal oxides studies for the conversion technology of carboxylic acids and bioresource based fatty acids to ketones: A review

Catalysis science and technology have been utilized for various chemical reaction processes for over five decades. The applications of catalysts in conventional and renewable energy processes have recently involved the utilization of heterogeneous metal oxides catalysts to produce biofuels, bio lubricants and many essential chemicals. Catalytic conversion technology of carboxylic acid and bioresource based fatty acids to form ketones is one of the most sustainable ways of producing chemicals, biofuels and bio lubricants. The technology is very efficient and healthy in the ketones production and biofuel upgrade, considering its harmless by-products of water and carbon dioxide. This review discusses the conversion technology of model carboxylic and natural fatty acids to ketones, which occurs in bulk form, on the catalyst surface, or both based on the temperature and redox property of the catalyst. Various solid metal oxides were reported to be effective for this reaction process.
