The president of the Food Marketing Institute provides an overview of the state of the food industry in 1977 with regard to productivity, scanning, energy, the credibility gap, and food prices. There are few signs that industry profitability may improve significantly over 1976. One of the challenges facing management in the industry today continues to be how to improve productivity while labor cost increases consistently exceed the rate of inflation. Rising food prices and a growing credibility gap cause concern.
