The influence of protein on food consumption in the rat

Food consumption was compared in male rats offered a free choice between a protein-rich and a protein-poor diet. It was found that the animals grew faster and showed a very strong preference for the protein-rich diet. The preference for the diet was in accordance with the amount of protein necessary for the growth of the animals.
