Abstract: Analysis of the copper content of the average American diet shows levels that may be lower than actual nutritional requirements. Thirteen male volunteers, in a carefully controlled environment, were fed conventional diets for two to seven periods of 30 days each. Copper in food, feces and urine was measured for the final 12 days of each period. The requirement was established at 1.55 mg/day; this amount exceeds the copper found in many ordinary diets.
