Selenium perspective
1983
Literature concerning the importance of trace element intakes of selenium (Se) in human metabolism is reviewed. Se has been shown to be effective in the prophylaxis and treatment of endemic cardiomyopathy, and in the alleviation of muscle pains and tenderness. Its biological role is attributed to the presence of selenocysteine at each of the 4 catalytic sites of glutathione peroxidase. This enzyme employs glutathione for organic hydroperoxide reductions, and protects cell membrane lipids (and perhaps cellular protein and nucleic acids) against oxidant damage. It is apparent that trace selenium alters the general immune and inflammatory response, but the precise mechanisms remain to be elucidated. (wz)
